Description
Citrus Batikanga is what I call a rhythmic fragrance. I'm a big fan of bergamot, so it was very important for me to create a fragrance based on this raw material. It reminds me of when I drank the most surprising and delicious non-alcoholic cocktails, based on citrus mixed with chili, often found in colorful, noisy and crowded tropical markets where there is a lot of rhythm. You have to imagine a market, early in the morning, with people fidgeting among a lot of wooden stalls, under the sun and heat.
For this fragrance I chose an original approach to working with citrus fruits. The citrus core I used is bergamot, often appreciated for its very sunny notes, as well as for its round, floral appearance. However, we chose to work with the bitter facet of bergamot, which is not commonly used in perfumery, and we emphasized this "bitterness" by adding notes of bitter orange.
A technical difficulty that arises with citrus fruits is that they are very volatile and therefore it can be difficult to make them persist, so we used chili to highlight and prolong the freshness of the citrus fruits, giving them persistence. For the chili accord I used Jamaican chili, while for the top notes I chose a dash of cardamom and mint. Together with chili essential oil, the notes really give a boost to the fragrance and expand the freshness of the citrus.
Since the essence was inspired by a tropical, warm and very humid environment, I wanted to express these facets as well, to create a contrast in the fragrance. Therefore, I used vetiver, to add deep and dusty notes of earth and wood, which contrast nicely with citrus. I also added myrrh, to soften the heat of the chili pepper and to provide depth.
