Papyrus Moleculaire is a woody, spicy and powdery fragrance that was inspired by the incredible encounter with papyrus root powder, in the company of a group of very chic, humorous women who smoked cigars and had tattoos. There was a sense of rebellion in the air, due to the duality of their very gentle, humorous and feminine facets in contrast to their strong personalities. The fact that they smoked cigars was a statement.
We have already been hiking for a few hours when I arrived in a village that welcomed me warmly. I sat down with the villagers in a reed house. They prepared papyrus and worked with all kinds of leaves, especially tobacco leaves. It was a beautiful moment. Papyrus is an interesting raw material for perfume because it has several facets and is at the same time woody, dry, smoky and spicy, so we decided to work on the different aspects of papyrus molecules.
For the spicy facet we combined notes of black pepper, which create a dark boost. The contrast between freshness and darkness was very much related to my experience in the village. We added coriander to give a crisp and green start, followed by elemi, which has a touch of resin and gives the fragrance personality.
For the woody look of papyrus we chose sandalwood, which softens the spices and adds roundness and delicacy. It is prolonged with the round, almond-like facet of the tonka bean and combines perfectly with the drying of the tobacco, which is provided by a tobacco absolute, fully evocative of my experience.
